Exercise… a love-hate relationship

I’m not overreacting when I say that I’m a couch potato, or, as I like to call myself, a ‘home bug’; I’d much rather be snuggled up at home under a fluffy blanket than exercising, or, lately, just in public at all!

I think this has something to do with my anxiety worsening. Having a voice inside my head, insulting me and telling me I’m ugly, fat etc is a significant set back in achieving my dreams, aspirations and living my life. It may sound stupid, but I often find it difficult keeping it together walking to get a coffee at work or taking the bins out at home! This is proving difficult for me, I don’t want to be how I am right now, and I’m trying real hard to change, but as we all know, its a loooooong journey.

Recently on my journey, I’ve joined Instagram (to provide support and to grow my blog), I watch a lot of YouTube videos for inspiration and I also read alot of self help books; all of which encourage exercise to help steer mental health in a positive direction. BOOOO! Why couldn’t it be eating cakes?!

The physical and mental benefits that exercise provides are obviously great, however, I know all too well how easy it is to get addicted to exercise and dieting, and also how hard it is to become motivated when you’re not in a good place. So, I compromised! Instead of joining a gym again provoking anxiety attacks(!), I either walk to and from work (30 mins each way) or do a short workout at home (this way I don’t have to worry about people looking at me, or feel self conscious of my jiggly bits and sweaty red face!) Sexy!

Again, I realise this requires a fair amount of motivation, so here’s a tip! If working out, only plan to do 15-20 minutes. That’s it. If you feel like doing more, you can, but you don’t have to, just as long as you complete your delegated time. And if you don’t know what exercise to do… Pinterest will be your new best bud! There are so many exercises to try on there, and with it being your own personalised (oooh get you!) workout, you can make it as fun or as strict as you fancy! (Weighted hula hooping is a fun one, but expect bruises!!)

But 20 minutes of exercise is still exercise’ I hear you fellow home bugs cry… then how about walking to and from work? I will admit to being an unhappy bunny when I start my journey, however it’s quite satisfying walking faster than the traffic and secretly racing other pedestrians – who have no idea I’m racing them -…or do they? I’m not going to stop either way haha!

Walking can be a great stress reliever, and can really help clear your mind for the day/evening ahead, just try it! And a workout (no matter how short) is a great way to start the day (if you’re an early bird who can wake up early and actually get out of bed and who I’m secretly – massively – jealous of) ergh.

Whatever we try, and wherever we are on the fitness scale (pffft, whatever that is!)we are making progress, and no one can say anything bad about that; and if they do, then let’s hope they get pecked on the toe by a goose.

With Love, Luj x
